What even is a trend?

Trends are a funny thing, aren’t they? Whether we like to admit it or not, we all follow them. Even the biggest trendsetters started out as followers (don’t make me remind you of the whole Paris Hilton and Kim K situation). But what is a trend actually?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a trend is a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving. And let’s face it: we simply can’t deny the big development in our behaviour. Just think about the rise of social media, combine that with fast fashion and BOOM you describe the 21st Century in a nutshell.
Can you even imagine a world without Instagram or Zara? It’s close to impossible. You’re probably reading this article from the comfort of your mobile phone. Needless to say, it’s inevitable for trends to develop in the same way. They are there in the blink of an eye, and once you know about it, you can’t imagine a life without.
Which brings me to the suit, the protagonist of every story in Garment. I’m going to make a risky statement now, but without social media, the suit wouldn’t be where it is today. Three years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed of wearing dressy trousers. Nowadays, I’m mindlessly scrolling through whatever social media outlet there is, to find the perfect combination of this two-piece garment.
Who would’ve thought we would be taking style advice from the corporate elite? It’s probably karma for the amount of times they were called “soulless suits” (or maybe that’s just me). You can imagine how I felt when I caught myself taking a screenshot of a picture of an unknowing suit wearer -who happened to be a middle-aged man- because I liked the print-fabric-combination.
I find it interesting to witness this trend-development; the way we follow certain fashion via social media without a single doubt. We have come to terms with the fact that it’s 2018, and that our main source of style inspiration comes from little devices that we take with us everywhere we go. It’s like carrying a trend forecaster in your double-breasted pocket.
Do you feel the need to nurture your obsession with social media and fashion trends? That’s funny, me too! Well you’re in luck, in Garment’s [mis]suit issue you can read all about the influence of social media on the fashion industry. Join us on the 28th at the launch in byAMFI.
